When I explain mine and Alexx's situation for the first time, there seems to be an implicit understanding that the easiest way to get her back in the country is to "just marry her", because by most people's understanding that's enough to get her here legally. People don't realise that being married isn't enough - we need to have been married for two years and I either need to be earning £18,600 a year or have that in cash in the bank somewhere. I'm freelance right now - I've got no significant regular reliable income and couldn't guarantee the £18.6k threshold. We could skip the two year requirement by bringing her over on the fiance visa, but that only lasts 6 months and she wouldn't be able to work that whole time which I know would drive her nuts cos she hates not being able to support herself. The whole system's skewed towards people who have the kind of savings/income that would allow them to support an extra person for that time, and says to anyone too far below the average wage line that "your family life is less important because you're poor, and it's your fault for not falling in love with a local", which is bullshit.

Also explains why the UK's immigration debate is so fucked, because no one actually knows the ins and outs of who and how people can actually come here.
